Red Dots on Handguns

Trijicon RMR Red Dot

Trijicon RMR Red Dot

A little more than a month ago, I mentioned a few cons relating to the use of a red dot sight on a defensive handgun. At one point, I argued that the red dot would be too big and might  impede shooting the target at greater distances. My friend, Stephen Pineau of M3 Strategies, posted a video of himself shooting his M&P with a RMR at a steel target at 100 yards. After I watched it, I gave him a call. We spoke for a while and he made me realize I was wrong for making that statement. The dot is not that big and we’re not shooting in the context of extended ranges, such as with AR-15 style rifle at 300 yard plus distance.  At the most probable and plausible distances you will shoot at, the red dot will not impede your ability to hit the target. That said, generally speaking, I still do not believe they are a necessary addition to your everyday carry gun in a defensive context 9 to 15 feet.
